Graveside Services were held at 1:30 pm Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Dalhart, TX - under the direction of Horizon Funeral Home of Dalhart, TX
Officiating wss Rev. Bob McAlister, Dalhart, TX.
At 2:30 PM ~ following the Graveside Service ~ Jean’s family and friends are invited to gather at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall to visit and celebrate Jean and Arty’s reunion in Heaven.
Ethel Jean Schaefer was born December 24, 1925 in Wichita Falls, Texas. In June of 1931 Jean moved to Clovis, NM with her parents Jerry and Edna Schaefer. She graduated from Clovis High School in 1943 and then attended Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX where she majored in drama. Sweethearts since the age of 14, Jean married the love of her life, Arty J Watkins on October 28, 1945 in Clovis.
After marrying, Jean & Arty continued their education at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. In December 1946 Arty & Jean moved to Dalhart, TX and with Arty’s father, founded Dalhart Packing Plant.
While growing up and at college, Jean played the violin, participated in fencing, student government, swimming and drama. As an adult she pursued numerous hobbies including snow skiing, square dance, sewing, watercolor painting, reading, and bridge. She also played golf and received her small plane pilot’s license in 1977. She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Gamma Nu Omega sororities. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Dalhart where she taught Sunday School for many years, served on pastor search committees, and was instrumental in planning Dalhart’s cabin at Glorietta, NM.
Survivors include her Son: Jerry & his wife Luan Watkins of Gurnee, IL, Daughter- Marty & her husband Larry Kinard Jr. of Waco, TX Three grandchildren Matthew McCauley Kinard & his wife Sarah of Dallas, TX, Erin & her husband Lyle Cermeck of Dallas, TX and Kelly & her husband Bill Bonjonia of Waco, TX Four great-grandchildren - Berkley Bonjonia of Waco, TX, Noah & Emma Kinard of Dallas, TX and Lilly Cermeck of Dallas, TX
Preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
