Jimmie Lee Akridge Cates, 74, died Saturday, October 6, 2012 in Dumas, Texas

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, 1000 E 16th St in Dalhart, Texas with Kevin Phillips, Pastor at First United Methodist Church of Channing, TX. Burial was in Channing Cemetery, Channing, Texas immediately following.

Jimmie Lee Akridge was born September 30, 1938 in Wichita Falls, TX to Jim and Mabel (Patton) Akridge. Her parents moved around on ranches in the Panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, Jimmie grew up a Cowgirl. On August 5th, 1956 she married Bob Cates in Beaver, Oklahoma. She and Bob had two sons, Will and Don Cates. Will was lost in an accident on December 20, 1969 at the age of 9. Jimmie loved life, family and horses. She preferred working outside and had a special place in her heart for her family… especially their 2 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Her love for her Lord, her family and her friends and all those she came in contact with was heartfelt and true.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years – Bob Cates of Channing, TX – Her son Don Cates and his wife Cindi of Channing, TX. Granddaughter Layce Heaton and husband Jerry of Cortez, CO - Grandson – Kelly Cates and his wife Twyla of Santa Rosa, NM 5 great –grandchildren – Keegan, Everlee, Eli, Sophee Heaton and Stetson Cates. 2 sisters – Ruby Jacobs of Las Vegas, NV and Gracie Davis of Elmwood, OK and brothers in Law – Gary Cates of Elmwood, OK and Dewayne Cates. 3 sisters in law - Coeta Akridge of Beaver, OK, Lila Akridge of Las Vegas, NV and Dolores Widner and husband Dennis of Clovis, NM, as well as Marilyn Bright and Judy Harwell.


Preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Hospice of Dumas or the Channing Cemetery fund.
